At the end of 2011, TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH announced its return to endurance racing, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For this participation, TMG chose ORECA as its partner. Since the beginning of the project, ORECA has been bringing both its operational support and experience of the discipline thanks to engineers and mechanics specialised in that field.
For its first season, the partnership met many successes. The team TOYOTA Racing led the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the TS030 HYBRID, a prototype designed, developed and built by TMG, with an engine produced by TOYOTA Motor Corporation. It was a first for the Japanese constructor which was returning to La Sarthe after its TS020 programme in 1998 and 1999. It was also a first for hybrid technology based on a super capacitor. The rest of the season was full of successes : three pole positions and three victories against Audi in Sao Paulo, Fuji and Shanghai. These were historic moments : first victory in a FIA event for TOYOTA since 1999 and first endurance win on the world stage since 1992. In 2013, the TOYOTA Racing team kept its good momentum going finishing second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In FIA-WEC, the team claimed two more victories, in Fuji and Bahrain, as well as three pole positions.
2014 is the year of success. With five wins in eight races, together with a podium and a pole in Le Mans, TOYOTA Racing and its new TS040 Hybrid clinched the Drivers’ and Teams’ World Champion titles! A first for a Japanese manufacturer in Endurance.
Team TOYOTA Racing, based in Cologne at the TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH technology center, will again participate in the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship, with ORECA as its partner.
