2013_ORECA_Renault_F3Renault Sport Technologies and ORECA announce their partnership to enter, as engine supplier, in the European F3 Championship, which has seen great success since its renaissance in 2012. Champions together in 1979, the two names will be reunited next season. For its return to the series, Renault has chosen to partner with ORECA’s engine department, who will be in charge of the engine design, but also supply and support for teams. Several teams have already confirmed their decision to use this engine for 2014. The official name will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

« Renault Sport Technologies and ORECA are strengthening their ties and for the engine department this entry into F3 is an important step » explains Serge Meyer, director of ORECA’s engine department based at Magny-Cours. « With Renault Sport Technologies’ help, notably with the combustion part, we are responsible for most of the project, from design to development of this engine which will correspond to the new 2014 FIA regulations. It’s a big responsibility but also an honor. We will be in direct competition with big manufacturers, all specialists of the discipline : the challenge we face is both interesting and exciting. »

Conforming to the 2014 rules for the European F3 Championship, ORECA is currently designing a 4 cylinder normally aspirated 2000cc direct injection motor. After the design phase, the engine department will be in charge of engine fabrication and supply, as well as support during races. Renault Sport Technologies will be giving support to several teams.

ORECA and F3, a long and storied history…

The story of ORECA and F3 began the first year of the Group’s existence, 40 years ago. Several successes followed, including 10 French Championships, eight Grand Prix of Monaco wins, and countless victories on the European level. ORECA will be returning to the first series of its competition career, and its first successes.

Renault and ORECA, back to the future!

Renault and ORECA have already won the European F3 Championship in 1979. At the time, a certain Alain Prost was behind the wheel of the Martini Mk27, taking seven wins to clinch the title that would lead to F1. Renault and ORECA is a strong tandem which also had success in European F2 Championship, then rallying, with titles in France, Europe and on the international level (J-WRC). ORECA Technology and Renault Sport Technologies have already worked together previously, notably for the past eight years through the engine department, in rally (R3), circuit (Clio Cup), and single-seaters (Formula Renault 2.0).

“Formula 3 occupies a special place in the history of single-seater racing. Inspired by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, its renewal was all the persuasion we needed to make our return,” said Renault Sport Technologies Motorsport Director Arnaud Boulanger. “The partnership with Oreca recalls past glories, although we are both looking firmly to the future and share the same big ambitions. With Formula Renault 1.6, Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5, we already have in place an effective pyramid system leading to Formula One. Our involvement in F3 will allow us to add an intermediate step. Over these last few years we have seen a lot of young drivers such as Jules Bianchi, Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne enjoy the benefits of F3 and increase their technical expertise after Formula Renault 2.0 and before moving on all the stronger for it to Formula Renault 3.5 Series.”

« Formula 3 was a great era for ORECA and our return to the discipline, which is rejoining its historical place, is a great moment » said Hugues de Chaunac, president of the ORECA Group. « We’ve had many wins with Renault and we are preparing to take on a new challenge together, which we hope will be crowned with success. That is our objective even if our competition is very sharp. It’s a big project for our engine department which shows its expansion to the European scene. We share in our taste for success and innovation. To be an important part of a ladder system leading to F1 is something that is very important to me. »
