Uncompromising, United Autosports wins the 6 Hours of Spa

As usual, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit offered superb action on the track this Saturday during the 6 Hours of Spa. After a very hot week, it was finally the rain that came a few minutes before the start: enough to call into question all the strategies envisaged so far.

While the free practice and qualifying sessions in the dry were perfectly dominated by the trio of Rebellion Racing, the race started in the wet reshuffled the cards in the LMP1 category. Norman Nato, who started from pole at the wheel of the R-13, had to face difficult conditions in torrential rain. Bruno Senna and Gustavo Menezes took over and were able to consolidate the crew’s place on the third step of the podium, with the fastest lap in the end.

In LMP2, although there was no shortage of brawls on the track, United Autosports’s ORECA 07 was uncompromising on a circuit which is doing particularly well. One week after its victory in ELMS, it is in FIA WEC that the British team, which started from pole, shines and thus offers itself a fourth consecutive victory in 2020 (2 wins in ELMS, 2 in WEC). Enough to lead the standings with a 24-point lead.

While the Signatech-Alpine Team may have been threatening and were aiming for more than a position in the final top 3, an impressive crash at 1:20 am from the end of the race unfortunately eradicated any hope of success. Despite three more pit stops than the leaders, it was Cool Racing’s ORECA 07 that finally reached the second step of the podium, with the Lapierre – Borga – Coigny trio. Starting from the back of the grid, the ORECA 07 of the Van Eerd – Van Der Garde – Van Uitert trio of Racing Team Nederland, finally took third place after a magnificent stint, including an impressive comeback early in the race. At the foot of the podium, the #38 from Jota Sport also came back in the hierarchy, followed by the #33 from High Class Racing, a time in the top three.

The next meeting in the World Championship and not the least: the 24 Hours of Le Mans where 19 ORECA 07 will be lined up on the starting line.
